Am I the only one who thinks a dead man's property shouldn't be able to be purchased by a big corporation? They didn't draw any of it, or create any of it, and i doubt they could do anything as good as the original man's work. How do they get off telling people not to draw fanart? Or edit a little music video?

I think copyrights have become a silly thing. I mean as long as you are not making money off of it I think it should be fine! and it is VERY wrong for Charlie brown to be owned like they are... something a wondeful man did is now nothing more then commercialium... didnt anyone get the point of the charlie brown chrismas special?! didnt they didnt they!!!!! *huff huff*

Copyright law without all the distortion |
|
As someone who teaches copyright law for a living, I can understand everyone's frustration at the disappearance of this funny and creative movie from the net. The issue is a lot more complicated than, "We're not making any money from it so it's OK," but lots of folks think that copyright law reaches too far (myself included, in certain instances).
I do want to clear up one misconception, however: there is no such thing as the the "United States Content and Media Parody Act," and the legality of parodies under copyright law has not held up in the Supreme Court "hundreds of times to this day." The Supreme Court has heard a copyright parody case exactly once, in 1994. Its ruling was very friendly to the rights of parodists, but it stopped well short of issuing an across-the-board permission for parodists to use copyrighted material. So be careful out there, especially when it comes to trusting (and, even worse, perpetuating) myths about what is and is not legal!

All I know is that I've learned my lesson. I've cancelled all my plans for the video of "Right Thurr" as performed by Dilbert as a result.

like everybody else, I'm sad about the video... These people should know the only people they're pissing off are the fans of their product or whatever... but it's ok whatever they do because I have my very own copy which I obtained from a certain rather popular peer-to-peer file sharing program...
FIGHT THE OCCUPATION!!!
er, something along those lines

Is it a real shame that you enjoyed it and feel guilty about it, or is it a shame that now you can't watch it anymore???

Does anyone remember the Dysfunctional Family Circus from a few years back? I'm trying to remember if Bill Keane's syndicate is the same one that issued the cease and desist for hey ya. Can the resident law person on the list give a brief summary of the copyright/parody law?
The big syndicates seem to have all this covered by sheer size alone. What small time (non-corporate) web person has the money/time/inclination to go through the whole lawsuit thing anyways?
As for Charles Shultz, I live about an hour north of where he was, and it seems like his living relatives in the area have a pretty good death grip on his intellectual properties.

Hey Dan, I was sent the link to the video from a friend of mine. I just wanted to thank you for a great fun video to watch. UFS has shut down a lot of stuff dealing with the copyright of "Peanuts", somethings being really crazy stuff that no one sees, unlike this video. It's sad to see what the world has come to, it's stupid that they would come down on the fan's/fan sites. Oh well. As part of the family, I just wanted to say that I'm on your side. Keep up the good work. B.S.

I found the Hey Ya CB file on Ebaumsworld.com (whispering) where it's there for another few days...run, don't walk..(returning to regular voice).
I've seen the c/d letters all over the net now, and it's kinda weird that people get upset over something. I can understand the Sesame Street people getting uptight about the Bert is Evil page, and the Shoot Me Up Elmo doll, but this is harmless.
Oh yeah, and if you want a laugh, find the DJ TIGA video of Hot in Herre by Nelly, only done with marionnets. Funny stuff. It's all Techno, but the words are the same. It's on Kazaa, but it might be on a site somewhere.
Oh yeah...where can I find good anime music videos? I've found a couple cool Enigma/Anime videos, such as the Final Fantasy X version of Gravity of Love. Anyone know a site that hosts a bunch of these?
Peace.
