N-e-way, forum member OMGartist-Josh recently posted, here about going to a con (Ohayocon 2008) that Dan was also going to, and being able to receive from the kind and patient Dan a couple AM sketches of:
OMGartist-Josh wrote:A commission pic of Riley, where she's just standing and smiling holding up her laptop, and a random doodle of Tristan beating a narutard with a sword.
Which, y'know, that rocks *all kinds* of socks. Yes, even the polka dot kind, and Tristans favorite, Striped socks!
So that gave me an idea. Since OMGartist-Josh was so kind as to scan in and post the uber-cool sketch of Riley Dan graciously provided him (it rocks check it out she's hacking your brain without even looking at the computer) I figured, since I couldn't find one, I'd start a thread here for other sketches of sketchy-fun AM stuff people have gotten from Dan over the years.
Me, I'm personally a sketch addict
So, uh, to begin! This here is seriously cool! Really! I learned so much from this. Composition especially, the way the feet aren't all facing the same direction, Tristan looking opposite to the direction of Alex's feet, and how that mirrors the other head/feet, the body placement/facings different from all that as well, Miya balancing out the right, Miya's eyes engagin the audience while her body adds symmetry with Alex's so there's 2 on the left, 2 on the right facing inwards, Miya's eyes complimenting Tristan's and serving to frame the eyes of the other two, Riley's darker hatched hair in the middle serving to anchor the piece, even the legs and shorts - Tristan->Riley->Alex, the legs are light->dark->light, while the shorts are dark->light->dark, the 'heaviness' of the hatching of Tristan's boots, shorts, shirt, hair and the detail of her jacket on the left perfectly complimenting the 'white space' of Alex, and the area around her, balancing that...
See, when I say I learn a lot from sketches, I'm... I'm not being facetious. I'm not joking. I really *am* learning a lot from them, and it's exciting enough that I actually do collect them. I know often that artists and comic/cartoon artists especially usually only want the world to see their 'best' 'finished' work, but I don't learn as much from that. So if this thread encourages others to post any other art like this laying around, aside from it being über awesome of them to take the time to do, you'd have my gratitude, 'cause I love this stuff.
This is the sketch, btw. Dan, I'm in your debt for it!
