How do I be an adult?

Postby aquarius » Wed Jun 13, 2012 4:44 pm

So I was googling this after dealing with my credit card company on the phone with india.

I was thinking to myself 'There has to be a good blog post or something about being an adult and things I should at least look up.'

But to my dismay there was no such thing. Then I realized, who better to ask than Venis Board.

Do you all, have any good tips or things I should know now that I am of the age specified in culture that implies I am supposed to act like an adult, and do 'adult' things like pay bills and have a job?

Thanks :tristan:

I think that is exactly accurate.

I think being an adult means you gotta give up on your dreams.

I see it all the time in these adults, who used to want to do something, but now they've been working at some job that sucks for 30 years.

If you can avoid doing that, you can be a kid forever, and that's probably a more fun way to live.

I think being an Adult is just having passed an arbitrary number.

I've found that being Mature is knowing when you can be silly like we are all the time as kids, and when you have to be serious and responsible and such. that maturity comes from experience.

Experience (coming from captain obvious) is gained by doing things. get out there and live. make mistakes, and learn from them. (or better still, learn from others' mistakes! I know you're asking us to kinda learn from ours, but I can't think of anything specific to say.)

thanks for the philosophical input, I really appreciate it :)

I think things are going a lot better now, at least I have a job that only sort of sucks and I can pay my bills.

hey, that's why I'm a professional philosomapher.

Paying bills is important. also important is taking the jobs that only sorta suck, so you can keep your head above water while looking for jobs that don't suck at all.

Unless your ideal job is pumping sewage from storage tanks... then it might be important for it to suck. (hey, I hear it pays well...)

I actually read something recently that I found very insightful. Don't get too attached to outcomes, and remember that life is a process, full of successes and failures. If you keep trying to better yourself/achieve better outcomes you will. Typically people find what they are looking for.

The difference between being a kid and being an adult is that you're (more) legally responsible for your own actions. There is no guarantee that you actually *know* all of the things you need in order to function, especially since schools and/or legal guardians aren't in a position to teach you everything (*even if* they give a serious attempt at comprehensive preparation, and even if students/children offer their best attention). You just have to do your best to make it work without screwing up too badly, because you are typically the one accountable.

An instruction manual would be nice, but there's a lot of controversy about that sort of thing. Maybe there is strong consensus about expectations as a tenant in an apartment, but people disagree about what you can/should do on the weekends.

Also, these come to mind:
