Cleaning up the boards with some of our help?

Postby Tails » Thu Nov 24, 2005 11:29 pm

Looks like some spambots have found us. Some particularly non PG ones too.

Here is what I was thinking. Dan is busy and is rarely here. I dunno about the other mods, but they are rarely here too. In order to try and keep this place clean, maybe a frequent board member should gain some mod powers, if only to clean this up. It bugs me to this crap on Dan's board.

I dunno. I don't think Dan doesn't want to make anyone he doesn't actually know a mod. Just a suggestion to fix this :(

If not even mod Dan is able to delete the awful awful spam and delete their account
Then we are surely doomed and this is most sad. Keep thinking though. Always think

*slides out of hiding for a moment*

I agree Tails something needs to be done either another more frequent mod (not saying anything bad about Dan or the other mods) Or a different route to signing up to make sure we aren't getting people who are getting paid to spam or bots.

Heh, your postcount certainly qualifies.

But yeah, I agree, the spam seems to be getting both more frequent and much worse.

*Looks at post counts*

Excluding aqua (simply because she hasn't been around for a while), I nominate the remaining top 6 posters to be mods (ed, Celey, goose, Raven, ma-kun, fennec). As Tails mentions, we are perfectly happy with the decisions Dan and the other mods make, but they simply cannot be here enough.

The board moderates itself pretty effectively, but even an awesome community cannot stop spambots.

The reason I've avoided it in the past is a) trust issues - I've seen many a message board fall when someone people think is cool are given mod powers and go butt-monkey on everyone, and b) I didn't want to play favorites - I make so and so a mod, and other person goes "hey, why not me?" and I've got a dilemma.

But yeah, a little help wouldn't hurt. Submit your applications for mod powers via PM. Just, once I choose someone to be a Mod, they'd better not abuse their power, nor wave it around like some sort of "I'm special and you're not" flag. That crap pisses me off.

I could probably do a good job...but I know what its like to be the only person you talk to who isn't a mod, and I'm not a fan of that...so...I nominate Mista_b cause he's weird enough not to gloat.

Maybe we should do a poll!

Popular opinion matters a little bit, but it may be better to channel those "votes" into verbal votes of confidence (a.k.a. "nominations") instead. This method can be useful, since someone can support any number of candidates, and they are forced to indicate more precisely why they are backing them (you will notice that my nomination method was very unsophisticated, and it is helpful to Dan to know that!)

And it should go without saying, but given the concerns Dan has, a poll will not help him much. It ultimately comes down to whom Dan is comfortable with blessing with moderator powers. He needs more information, and applications give him just that.

That's why I asked for applications, too - nominations are great and all, but if the person nominated doesn't want to do it, then that sorta defeats the whole purpose.

To curb the jealousy issue... what about "secret" mods? People who have mod powers, but have no indicators that show it, so unless they told you, you'd never know.

Or you could like have two regular mods and one secret mod, just to confuse people... pick your favorite to me the secret mod, and then nobody knows who your favorite is (Miroku's gonna be the secret mod... I can tell... :-p)

Of course, this secret mod has to be the most trusted one, as they aren't under board member scrutiny, but I honestly can't think of anyone on the board at all ('cept maybe Carol, but that's just 'cause we've only known her for a few days) who isn't that trustworthy.

Also, you can have new accounts made with new names, so nobody knows who the mods are... I dunno, I'm just kinda rambling at this point... not sure how to end this guy off...

*turns into Melissa*
